#2:Mom Fatally Hits Her Husband With Her Car While Their Children Sit Inside, Cops Say

fox news - #2:Mom Fatally Hits Her Husband With Her Car While Their Children Sit Inside, Cops Say
A mother fatally struck her husband with her car as their two terrified children sat inside the vehicle, authorities said.

A car driven by Angela Luke, a second-grade teacher, hit 42-year-old Daniel Luke during a domestic dispute at their home in Bloom Township, Ohio on Sunday night. Luke, her husband of 18 years, passed away the next day.

Angela Luke, 40, was initially charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and reckless homicide, and lost her job, The Associated Press reported. But after a harrowing 911 call made by the couple's daughter emerged, the charges against her were dropped and the
school superintendent gave her back her job.

In the call, the 12-year-old girl described their attempts to get away from her violent dad, who she said had been drinking.

"They’ve been fighting for a long time, but he’s never took it this far," the girl told the dispatcher, WBNS reported. "My dad hit my mom and he pushed her into a flower pot."

Later in the call, she can be heard screaming: "Get off my mother! He's choking my mom! Get off!"

She got in the car with her nine-year-old sister and their mother and tried to leave, according to reports.

"Go fast, Mommy, go fast," she is heard saying, according to The Associated Press

. But she then says: "Oh, my God, he's dead. He was hanging onto the car, and he fell off.

My father's dead! He was holding onto the window and he fell right off. He's bleeding really bad."

After listening to the call, the superintendent of the Pickerington Local School District gave Luke her job back.

"It's compelling enough that it allowed the superintendent to make a decision that she thought was the right decision for Mrs. Luke and the district,"

 district spokesman David Ball said.

The charges could still go before a grand jury or get refiled, the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

reported. Calls to the prosecutor's office on Thursday afternoon were not returned. Before the charges were dropped, Angela Luke pleaded not guilty on Monday afternoon and was released on bond.

#2:Klinsmann shrugs off Donovan blast

fox news - #2:Klinsmann shrugs off Donovan blast
United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann laughed off criticism by former star Landon Donovan on Friday as he geared up for a crucial Confederations Cup playoff duel with arch-rivals Mexico.

Klinsmann faces one of the biggest tests of his four-year reign at the helm of USA team on Saturday when his side faces Mexico in a game which will decide CONCACAF's representative in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

The high-stakes encounter at the Pasadena Rose Bowl follows a bitterly disappointing semi-final exit on home soil in July, a tournament won by Mexico.

The US performances in the Gold Cup, and a 4-1 mauling by Brazil last month, prompted former captain Donovan to call for Klinsmann to be sacked if his lost to Mexico.

"Anywhere else in the world, if this coach had those results, and they lose this game against Mexico, they'd be fired," Donovan said earlier this week.

However Klinsmann said he welcomed Donovan's remarks and added that he was relishing the prospect of a match where "everything was on the line."

"No problem for me at all," Klinsmann said when asked for his reaction to Donovan's comments.

"If people express their feelings or get their thoughts. At the end of the day this game is there for everybody.

"We all discuss the game, we all have different opinions, and we love that part of the sport."

Klinsmann added that he welcomed the sense of pressure or expectation generated from a 93,000 sellout, with more watching on television.

"Expectations are high, thankfully," Klinsmann said. "Because it shows you the growth of the game in this country that more and more people talk about it and express their expectations.

"For me though (pressure) is exciting. Every opportunity where you can have games where there's a lot on the line it's the stuff that you are living for. For some people it may be difficult but it's totally cool with me," added Klinsmann, a veteran of Germany's 1990 World Cup-winning team.

US captain Michael Bradley, who has retained the armband given to him for the Gold Cup, said the thrill of matches against Mexico never got old.

"They're special games," said Bradley, who will win his 107th international cap on Saturday.

"I think it's always important to take a moment in weeks like this and take it all in because there will come a day when I'm not playing any more and you'll miss this," Bradley said.

"For all of us it's something we don't take lightly."

#2:MATT BARNES: I ONLY WENT TO GLORIA’S HOUSE BECAUSE I COULD TELL MY SONS WERE IN DISTRESS

fox news - #2:MATT BARNES: I ONLY WENT TO GLORIA’S HOUSE BECAUSE I COULD TELL MY SONS WERE IN DISTRESS
Matt Barnes in speaking out regarding the altercation that occurred between him and ex-teammate Derek Fisher at the Los Angeles home belonging to his estranged wife, Gloria Govan. As you may recall, reports implied that Barnes flew into a jealous rage when he learned that Fisher and Govan are romantically involved. Barnes, however, insists that the rumors have gotten out of hand and that the media is painting the situation as something that it is not.

“I can’t believe people think I was some maniac driving 95 miles and listening to Tupac to go beat somebody up,” the father of two told ESPN. “No. I live 15 minutes away, and I was going over to check on my kids because they seemed uncomfortable. That was my main reason for going over there.”

Barnes said that one of his 6-year-old twin sons sent him a bizarre text message late Saturday evening that alarmed him.

“I’m like, first of all, why are you still up? It’s like 10 o’clock at night,” Barnes said. “So I text back, ‘I love you, and I miss you too.’ Then I FaceTimed him. I’m just like, ‘Hey, what’s up buddy?’”

“Now, Carter is like the rambunctious one. He’s always jumping off the walls. And when I saw his face, he was just sitting there, and I knew something was wrong. I was like, ‘What’s wrong, Carter?’ and he shook his head, ‘No.’ Then he lays his head down on the couch, puts a pillow in front of his face and says, ‘Mommy’s friend Derek is here.’”

At that point, Barnes asked to speak with his other son, Isaiah, who also appeared upset.

“This wasn’t a phone call. We were on FaceTime. I could see him and the look on his face,” the Memphis Grizzlies forward explained.

From there, he decided to drive to Govan’s home to make sure that his sons were okay. When he arrived, things quickly escalated and according to reports, a physical altercation ensued. Barnes would not go into detail about what happened because there is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the NBA as well as the Memphis Grizzlies.

Lt. Joe Hoffman of the Redondo Beach Police Department confirmed that officers did respond to a 911 call concerning an altercation between Govan, Fisher and Barnes on Saturday night. No charged were filed.

“We were close. We were friends,” Barnes said of Fisher. “Some things have happened to change that. It is what it is.”

#2:Marvel is indeed still releasing 'Inhumans' to theaters in 2019

fox news - #2:Marvel is indeed still releasing 'Inhumans' to theaters in 2019
Yes, I know they already announced that they were making an "Inhumans" movie, going so far as to give the film a date and everything, and last year, they started seeding the idea of the Inhumans on the show "Marvel's Agents Of SHIELD," going so far as to transform Skye, one of the main characters of the series, into an Inhuman. This season, she's beginning to get comfortable with her powers, and she's hunting for new Inhumans who she can help.

There's a rumor online today that Kevin Feige has pulled the plug on the "Inhumans" film specifically because he doesn't want to have the TV side of things defining the rules and playing with the ideas for the next few years. I'll state simply that the rumor is not true. I went directly to an unimpeachable source, who told me that the film division is still planning to make the film, and there are certain elements of the "Inhumans" universe that have been declared off-limits to the "SHIELD" people as a result.

There have been several big comic book movie rumors this week that simply aren't accurate, and I have decidedly mixed feelings about writing stories simply to refute a rumor. I understand how this sort of thing happens, and how a partial piece of information can get reported as the whole story, but when you see the story everywhere and you are getting e-mailed from people asking why you're not running it, you sometimes have to jump in and say…

… which is what we're saying in this particular case.

Here's how you will know that Marvel has cancelled the feature film. If you see the royal family, including Black Bolt, show up on the TV show, then there's a good chance the feature division has finally changed their mind.

#2:Colts Throw Shade at J.J. Watt, Dwayne Allen Refers to Him as "Justin James" Watt

fox news - #2:Colts Throw Shade at J.J. Watt, Dwayne Allen Refers to Him as "Justin James" Watt
The Colts have had a bumpy season so far, but they can at least boast about one thing. They didn't just defeat the
Texans last night (which, if you saw their offense, is not that noteworthy). They defeated
J.J. Watt, the man sculpted from the inner temples of Valhalla. For just the second time in his NFL career, Watt finished with no solo tackles or sacks.

And the Colts had no problem reminding you of that. In its website's

notebook, they made it a point to mention that the squad neutralized Watt. That's definitely not untrue, and the offensive line does deserve credit for doing so.

What's interesting, though, is the quote the website included from tight end

Dwayne Allen. The Colts dominated J.J. Watt so much that he's not even J.J. Watt anymore.

“Justin James (Watt) is arguably the greatest defensive player in this league and for him to have a quiet night, attributed to a short week and great coaching,” Allen said.

Justin. James. Watt. Full name and everything. Can't say that to a dude who freelances as a

God of War boss. Allen better be under a roof, or he might be struck by lightning.

#2:NBA: 5 Western Conference Predictions for the 2015-16 Season

fox news - #2:NBA: 5 Western Conference Predictions for the 2015-16 Season
As the NBA preseason unfolds and we draw closer and closer to the start of the 2015-16 regular season, we can only hope this year brings about as much joy as last year’s did. And while that may prove to be wishful thinking, there is one thing we have a feeling will continue to hold true: The Western Conference will remain the one to beat.

From the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, and San Antonio Spurs, the best of the best reside in the West. The only difference between this year and last, is that we honestly have no idea how these clubs will line up in the end-of-the-year standings. Still, that will never stop us from making our predictions.

Therefore, as we look forward to the start of the new year, here are our five Western Conference predictions for the 2015-16 NBA season.

1. It will not be a smooth transition for the Los Angeles Lakers

D'Angelo Russell during the NBA rookies photo shoot

Nick Laham/Getty Images

With Kobe Bryant’s return to the game following last season’s shoulder injury — in what could potentially be his final year in the NBA — and an influx of young talent, the Los Angeles Lakers are hoping to reverse their fortunes in 2015-16. Unfortunately, as much we’d like to believe that Showtime will once again be returning to Hollywood, we have a feeling the road back to relevancy is going to be a bumpy one.

It’s not just that the Lakers have started the preseason off 0-3, it’s that injuries continue to hamper this club’s ability to form any sort of continuity. While

Julius Randle — the No. 7 overall pick in 2014 — has been a beast since coming back from the broken leg he suffered last year, rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell — the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft — has been up and down since putting on the Purple and Gold. If the Lakers hope for any sort of success, then they will need all their young players to grow up quickly. Something that’s easier said than done.

#2:The FBI warns of weaknesses in chip-and-sign credit card systems

fox news - #2:The FBI warns of weaknesses in chip-and-sign credit card systems
The FBI has a stern warning for the credit card industry's latest security measure, the EMV chip.

In a statement today, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center warned that the new chips don't prevent against online fraud or point-of-sale compromises of the type seen in the Target hack. The warning emphasizes the weakness of signature-based systems ("chip and sign" rather than "chip and PIN"), and instructs merchants to require a PIN number in place of a signature wherever possible. "This fully utilizes the security features built within the EMV card," the warning states.

The underlying weaknesses in the warning were already known to much of the industry, but it emphasizes the frustration many feel with the current deployment. "The FBI’s alert should be a wake-up call to the banks and card networks that continue to stand in the way of making PIN authentication the standard in the US just as it has been around the world for years," said Brian Dodge, executive vice president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, in a provided statement.

Even with the new system, the US is still woefully behind the curve in payment technology, as most major markets have finished the transition to chip-and-PIN systems a decade ago. The current system is more relaxed, allowing for signatures in place of PIN numbers, but

#2:Duchess Kate Middleton And Prince William Don't Look Like A 'Splitting' Couple: Royals (Harry Too) To Do Bond's 'Spectre' Premiere

fox news - #2:Duchess Kate Middleton And Prince William Don't Look Like A 'Splitting' Couple: Royals (Harry Too) To Do Bond's 'Spectre' Premiere
Duchess Kate and Prince William have been subjects of divorce rumors not long after they married four years ago. In and effort to allegedly gloss over the latest gossip about their torn marriage, Kate Middleton, and her husband are making joint appearances. Will and Kate are attending the Spectre premiere later this month.

Celeb Dirty Laundry questioned the legitimacy of the movie date, saying that it is a smokescreen designed to throw the public off the divorce scent. The tabloid claims that
Duchess Kate and Prince William are caving to the "pressures of Royal life," and royal insiders are getting antsy.

The James Bond film, starring Daniel Craig, which is supposed to be the last installment in the franchise, is the perfect setting to help debunk Will and Kate divorce rumors. Moreover, handlers at Kensington Palace, under the orders of The Queen, are hard at work in the PR department trying to salvage the couple's strained marriage.

Also, later this month, Prince William and Kate Middleton are also on tap to attend a state dinner with China’s President Xi Jinping and the First Lady. Duchess Kate has been absent from the public for a time over the summer. It's quite understandable; she recently gave birth to Princess Charlotte and needed rest and bonding time like any other mom after delivery a baby.

Now, she's on a tear and is often seen in public looking charming and fashionably fabulous. Reportedly, this marks the third time in a month Wills and Kate are attending a public event together. Skeptics say Duchess Kate is likely doing as she's told. They attended Harrow College for World Mental Health Day and were snapped together with Prince Harry at the World Rugby Cup two weeks ago.

Given that Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage crumbled in the public and left a dark cloud in its wake, it's understandable if Queen Elizabeth II is doing damage control. If Duchess Kate and William divorce, it could tarnish the legacy of the monarchy. We agree, and don't want this fairytale to end.

The rumors have not been confirmed, and fans of the storied couple want to keep it that way -- without a doubt.

#2:House Republicans should elect Mitt Romney speaker. No, really.

fox news - #2:House Republicans should elect Mitt Romney speaker. No, really.
I'll admit it: When I first proposed this to my colleagues it was just a joke. But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. And apparently it's an idea that House Republicans are already taking about!

SPEAKER ROMNEY?: now have enough sources to report there is real, serious (tho still limited) talk about it. (!)
#tcot #p2

— Lisa Desjardins (@LisaDNews) October 8, 2015

So here's a case I didn't imagine I'd be making when I woke up on Wednesday; here's the case for Speaker Romney.

House Republicans have already endorsed him. Virtually every sitting House Republican endorsed Romney for president in 2012. They were willing to make Romney not just the leader of their party, but the leader of the country. If you can trust a man with nuclear weapons, you can probably trust him to manage floor debate.

Romney is good at building the kind of coalitions House Republicans need.

Romney, remember, was the first Republican to win the party's presidential nomination

after the rise of the Tea Party. The GOP was exceptionally fractured at that point, and Romney — who came from Massachusetts, had long identified as a moderate Republican, and had passed the precursor to Obamacare — still managed to win the nomination. That was an almost remarkable feat, and it's a skill set the House Republicans badly need.

Mitt Romney is very, very good at raising money. And raising money is a very big part of the speaker's job. John Boehner told

Politico he spends between 180 and 190 nights on the road each year begging rich people to hand him their money. The speaker, Boehner said, needs to make sure Republicans "have the resources necessary to win."

But Boehner is an amateur fundraiser compared with Romney, who

raised almost $400 million for his 2012 bid (and that doesn't include the hundreds of millions given to his allied Super PACs). With Romney in the speaker's chair, House Republicans would always have the resources necessary to win.

Mitt Romney was a management consultant who specialized in turning around failing organizations.

And what are House Republicans right now but a failing organization? I tend to think the transferability of business skills to government is overstated, but, crucially,

Republicans don't think that — one of the key arguments for Romney was he had the experience to run government more like a business. And the House Republican Conference needs to be run more like a business and less like a goat rodeo.

Romney is unusually good at both the inside game and the outside game.

I argued recently that Boehner's resignation is part of a broader trend in American politics: The outside game is becoming relatively more important compared with the inside game. But Romney is good at both kinds of games.

On the inside game, we have hard evidence of Romney's talents. As Andrew Prokop wrote in

his analysis of The Party Decides theory of presidential politics, "Romney's 2012 victory is the

only race since 2000 in which ... a party made an early decision and got its way."

The outside game is a bit tougher. While Romney isn't known as the greatest campaigner of all time, the bar for presidential candidates is way, way higher than the bar for congressional leadership. I have heard Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Mitch McConnell give speeches. Trust me, Romney is better at lighting up crowd or giving an interview than they are.

He can give Republicans a national figure able to oppose a Democratic president.

Obviously Republicans would like to win in 2016. But they may lose! And they know it. If they lose, then Romney offers them something minority parties rarely have: a figure of national stature able to stand up to the president of the United States. And since Republicans are likely to keep their congressional majority even if a Democrat wins the presidency, it behooves them to have a strong speaker who can translate their control over the most powerful branch of government into public prestige.

He can give House Republicans a national figure able to oppose a Republican president.

It's obvious why Republicans will need a strong negotiator if a Democrat wins the presidency. But the same may well be true if a Republican wins the White House. Congressional Republicans, after all, tend to represent safe, conservative districts while the president has a much broader constituency. So whether it's President Bush or Rubio or Trump or Fiorina, House Republicans are going to need a speaker who won't go squishy under presidential pressure. And that will be easier for the speaker has a public profile and a national base of his or her own, as Romney does.

Romney doesn't have a job right now. One of the problems Republicans are having getting candidates to run for speaker is their best prospects already have better jobs; Paul Ryan, for instance, loves being chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. But Romney is an unemployed 68-year-old, and given that he did his best to secure the most challenging job in the country, there's little reason to believe he's really ready for retirement.

So accept it. He's tanned, he's rested, and he's ready. Mitt Romney for speaker!

#2:Scientists Find a Toxic Threat Lurking Under the Melting Arctic

fox news - #2:Scientists Find a Toxic Threat Lurking Under the Melting Arctic
that was once frozen all year, making it a potentially potent new source of toxic mercury pollution in the region, according to a new study.

Their research, published Friday in the journal Science, found that Arctic permafrost contained high levels of the bacteria that transform inorganic mercury into hazardous methyl mercury.

Exposure to that form of mercury can cause nervous system and other developmental damage in mammals, including human fetuses and children.

“With increasing temperatures, particularly in northern latitudes, depths below the surface that were permafrost 10 and 20 years ago now annually freeze and thaw,” said study co-author Dwayne Elias, a microbiologist with the federal Oak Ridge National Laboratories.  “If this continues, and it probably will, the permafrost of today will become the active layer of tomorrow, [allowing] the bacteria carrying these genes to essentially wake up from being dormant for thousands and thousands of years.”

The researchers found the key genetic markers that reveal the presence of methylating bacteria in other environments, he said, including coastal dead zones. But permafrost samples “gave us some of the highest counts in all of the thousands of samples” they analyzed, said Elias.

Elias and his colleagues tested over 3,500 “metagenomes”—the combined genetic material from all the organisms present in a sample of water, soil, or other environmental matter—for the genes present in bacteria capable of transforming inert mercury into toxic mercury. The metagenomes represented a comprehensive sample of the world's terrestrial and aquatic environments, he said.

Mercury pollution in the Arctic occurs when global air and ocean currents carry emissions from coal-fired power plants in parts of

Asia, Europe, and

North America, into the high north, where they fall onto ice and snow on land and on the ocean's surface. When that mercury meets up with bacteria containing methylating genes, toxic mercury is the result.

“Once that methyl mercury is made in the subsurface [soils], that's essentially in groundwater, the water in the subsurface that eventually makes its way into rivers and streams,” said Elias. Wild Arctic game such as moose and caribou ingest that mercury when they drink from contaminated waterways, leading the people who hunt and consume those animals to ingest it as well.

Marine wildlife common in traditional northern diets, including fish, seals, and

whales, will also be exposed to this new source of toxic mercury, Elias said. “That groundwater is going to make its way into the marine environments—and we also saw quite high counts of the genes in coastal dead zones and coastal marine areas as well,” said Elias.  “So one way or another, in the rivers and streams or on the marine side, this methyl mercury is going to make its way into the animals that eventually get consumed by the local populations.”

Fish and marine mammals accumulate toxic mercury in their tissues as they consume contaminated animals or plants. That has already lead to health problems for Arctic peoples who eat those animals.

A study published in August by the journal Environmental Health Perspectives

reported that among Inuit communities in northern Quebec, Canada, women and children were ingesting nearly two times the government's recommended maximum daily intake of mercury.

Children in some of these villages scored an average of five points lower on intelligence tests than children in less-remote Arctic communities, and were four times more likely to need remedial education.

There appear to be fewer data on toxic mercury exposure in the European Arctic, although in 2014 scientists

 reported high levels of mercury

among residents of two coastal communities in Greenland. In 2004, researchers reported that in the sub-Arctic Faroe Islands of the North Atlantic,

children born to mothers who ate pilot whale meat while pregnant had impaired cognitive abilities, hearing, and heart health throughout childhood and into their teen years.

fox news - #2:Shark bites surfer off Hawaii coast, leaving him in critical condition
A 25-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark off the famed North Shore on Hawaii's island of Oahu on Friday, and the man was rushed to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition, emergency officials said.

The shark measured between 10 and 12 feet (3 to 3.7 meters),  according to officials with Honolulu Emergency Medical Services. It was unclear what species of shark it was.

The man, after he was bitten on the left leg, was helped ashore by another surfer and paddle boarder and a kayaker who towed them in, said Shane Enright, a spokeswoman for the service.

Others on the beach helped put the man on a surfboard and used a board's leash as a tourniquet as they waited for an ambulance to arrive, Enright said.

The man was taken in critical condition to a local trauma hospital for treatment of injuries on his left leg, she said.

It was believed to be the fifth shark attack in Hawaii this year.

Oahu Ocean Safety lifeguards have been patrolling the waters around a 2 mile (3 km) area where the attack occurred and have closed nearby beaches, officials said. A decision to reopen them will be made on Saturday.

fox news - #2:No-look trick-shot not for matches, says Djokovic
Novak Djokovic on Friday promised not to embarrass any of his opponents in competitive matches by trying to repeat a trick-shot that has gone viral on the Internet.

The Serbian world number one said his no-look backhand winner, when he starts with his back to the incoming ball before spinning round and slapping it over the net, could have been a one-off anyway.

"Fortunately for me, there was somebody that recorded that. Doesn't happen very often. I didn't work on it," he said of the wonder-shot he played during practice in Belgrade.

"It's just instinctively I turned around and managed to play what I played. It was funny."

YouTube footage of the shot has had nearly 600,000 views, but Djokovic said it would be "disrespectful" to an opponent to attempt something similar in a match.

"I don't know if I'm able to repeat that. I don't think so in a match.  It's all about risk management, and I think it's too high of a risk to play that shot," he said.

"I think in a match it's different because you also have respect for the opponent and the game, so you can't really start doing different kind of things because it's a bit disrespectful towards your opponent."

#2:The $70,000 Minimum Wage Experiment Reveals A Dark Truth

fox news - #2:The $70,000 Minimum Wage Experiment Reveals A Dark Truth
Earlier this year, a small Seattle-based payment processing company made headlines when its 31-year-old CEO made a rather jarring change to the company’s pay structure: Gravity Payments
would pay all employees, at a bare minimum, $70,000 annually. It was met with a variety of reactions, ranging from those who said CEO Dan Price was establishing himself as a working-class hero, to those who thought he was actively destroying the fabric of society as we know it.

The truth is, Price had read a study that said the optimal level of happiness can be achieved with an income at around $70,000, and decided that he was in a position to make a difference. So he acted on it — by cutting his own salary by 90%.

Now, with several months having passed, we’re beginning to see the fallout. Recently, a slew of articles and media attention has returned to Price’s company. But this time, it hasn’t been quite as positive.

“A Company Copes With Backlash Against the Raise That Roared,” reads a New York Times headline

. “CEO counting cost of £45,000 minimum wage decision,” says another, from The Telegraph

. Many others are circulating as well, all spelling doom for Gravity Payments, with Price’s minimum wage policy as the chief reason for the company’s issues. As these articles explain, the company did lose business — from clients anticipating fee increases, and others who didn’t want to be associated with what they felt was a political statement.

But lost in a whirlwind of “I told you so” is the fact that Price’s experiment hasn’t really failed. In fact, Gravity Payments is still chugging along. If you were to actually dig into the meat of the doomsayers’ arguments, it turns out that even though the company has lost a handful of clients, it’s signed on even more — so many more that it’s had to go on a hiring spree.

#2:FSA Fears Russian Ground Deployments

fox news - #2:FSA Fears Russian Ground Deployments
A top Syrian rebel commander fears insurgent successes against Russian-backed Syrian government forces in central Syria the past two days may prompt Moscow to escalate its intervention to save its client, President Bashar al-Assad, and deploy ground troops.

General Salim Idris is jubilant at the successes Free Syrian Army rebels have notched against Assad, whose forces launched ground offensives this week in the center and northwest of the war-torn country with close-ground support from Russian warplanes. He worries, however, about what is to come.

The biggest Syrian government offensive is in the countryside around Hama, and "the regime lost more than 20 tanks, lost a lot of soldiers and officers and vehicles" there, Idris said. In Latakia, the coastal province, FSA rebels "shot down three helicopters, and it is a very good success."

U.S.-supplied TOW anti-tank missiles have proved decisive against Assad's armor, but the rebels are fast running out of supplies, Idris told VOA in an exclusive interview.

The general, who defected from the Syrian army early in the civil war in 2012, said his biggest worry, though, is that Moscow will send in its own soldiers. He said that at the moment, the only Russians on the front lines are some officers and advisers. He fears that the Syrian government forces' recent setbacks will change that.

"Now everything is to be expected," he said, frowning. "Maybe they will send troops to fight for the regime because, as you know, the airstrikes cannot control the territory. And the last two days gave them a very important lesson."

News that a top Iranian general had been killed Thursday night near Aleppo came as VOA was interviewing Idris. The Iranian, who was killed by Islamic State extremists, not the FSA, was playing a key coordination role between the Syrian army and Iranian volunteers fighting for Assad.

Idris said that so far, Iranian guardsmen, Iraqi Shia fighters and militiamen from the radical Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah, who have all been fighting on behalf of Assad, have been mainly concentrated in the west of Syria, close to the border with Lebanon and in the Syrian capital, Damascus. They have not played a vanguard role in the battles in central Syria and in the northwest toward Latakia, an Assad stronghold.

That, too, could change as the Syrian army flounders.

Rebels' needs

The general sighed when asked what the rebels need. As well as anti-tank weapons, he said, they need shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, known as MANPADS. Idris said he tried many times over the past four years to persuade the West and Gulf countries to supply MANPADS, but they feared the missiles would fall into jihadist hands. He holds out no hope now that they will rethink their position and supply a weapon that would be a game-changer on the battlefield. "It is a hopeless case," he said.

He fears that now that the Russians are intervening, the West will reduce its overall support of the Syrian revolution, not wanting to get embroiled in a Cold War-style proxy war. He said he was shocked to learn that the Pentagon will stop the training and equipping of rebel fighters, a program that has been plagued with problems but one the general said could still be useful. "I am very sad," he said.

He added, "I expect, maybe, that the support will be less and less. And I told commanders yesterday, they have to think that someday they will not receive any support."

The future of the revolution will be decided only by those fighting on the ground, the general said.

#2:A depressing study of how people respond to stereotypically black and white names

fox news - #2:A depressing study of how people respond to stereotypically black and white names
Can reading a name lead to a racist reaction? A new study from researchers at the University of California Los Angeles suggests that yes, it can. According to the findings, people tend to associate what the authors call "black-sounding names," like DeShawn and Jamal, with larger, more violent people than they do "white-sounding names," like Connor and Garrett.

In a series of studies involving more than 1,500 people, the researchers found that respondents held an unknown white man convicted of assault — an actual violent crime — and an unknown black man in equal regard in terms of size and aggression.

Related Why police so often see unarmed black men as threats

In one of the studies, researchers tested people who self-identified as "slightly left of center politically," asking them to read about different scenarios in which a man acted out violently, only with certain details changed. Sometimes they gave the character a criminal history, a successful business record, or a neutral background in which they offered no details about his history. And they changed the character's name to sound like it belonged to different ethnic groups — white, black, Hispanic, and Asian.

When people were given the character's specific background (like a business record), they didn't associate stereotypically black and white names with different traits, based on their stated perceptions of the character's height, build, aggressiveness, and other factors.

But in neutral scenarios, people linked the black-sounding names (Jamal, DeShawn, or Darnell) with aggression, while the white-sounding names (Connor, Wyatt, or Garrett) received more leniency. In fact, people associated black-sounding names with neutral backgrounds as equally dangerous to white-sounding names with a criminal record.

fox news - #2:New Horizons captures images of water ice and blue skies on Pluto
Images of Pluto taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft show the dwarf planet has blue "hazes" and water ice, the agency said in a statement released today.

As NASA explains, the blue sky is formed by the way "haze particles" scatter blue light, although the particles themselves are probably gray or red. The particles responsible for the color are "soot-like particles we call tholins," the agency writes.

Also shown in the images were exposed regions of water ice. "Large expanses of Pluto don’t show exposed water ice, because it’s apparently masked by other, more volatile ices across most of the planet," Southwest Research Institute science team member Jason Cook said in the statement. "Understanding why water appears exactly where it does, and not in other places, is a challenge that we are digging into."

#2:Has Memphis Depay Actually Started Badly For Manchester United?

fox news - #2:Has Memphis Depay Actually Started Badly For Manchester United?
I was under the impression that after goals in the ties against Club Brugge and PSV in the Champions League, and bursts of brilliance in the Premier League, especially at Aston Villa and Southampton, Memphis had done enough to suggest he was a good signing that could turn into a great one.

Sure, there have been some bad moments too. In fact, in United’s biggest two games of the season so far, against Liverpool and Arsenal, he was withdrawn at half time for being so poor. This has now allowed the naysayers to creep in and voice their discontent.

So, earlier this week, Memphis Depay decided to respond to the alleged criticism by insisting he is still adjusting to Old Trafford following his £25 million transfer for PSV.

“There are a lot of games in Manchester. There are very few rest days and on training days you are mainly concerned with recovering,” Depay explained on Wednesday to De Telegraaf. “It’s heavy, two games a week, always at a high level, and my body has to get used to that.”

All of which is both understandable and unnecessary for him to explain. Let’s not forget that Memphis Depay is just 21-years-old, and while he might have failed to match the immediate impact that Anthony Martial has had, there’s still been plenty of hints that he has the strength, pace, and guile to trouble English defences for seasons to come.

It’s quite easy to forget the plaudits that were coming his way following United’s first leg victory over Club Brugge 3-1. With United having conceded an early away goal and needing a quick response to take control of the tie Depay was the one who stepped up.

Not only did he flick the ball over a defender, hold off two others, and then drive a composed finish into the ball from 18 yards for his opener, but his second was a sublime curling effort that he had to possess an arrogant gall to even attempt. Depay then set-up the third with a cross for Maraoune Fellaini to head home just to confirm his impressive display.

Against PSV, in the first group stage game, Depay was once again the bright spark; always asking for the ball, driving forward with poise and purpose, while still linking up gloriously with his fellow front-men. Yes, United ultimately lost the match, but Depay let it be known that he was ready to perform on the European stage. So far he’s got three goals in four appearances. A very healthy return.

Unfortunately, in the Premier League, it’s been a different story. In eight games he’s only scored one goal, against a woeful Sunderland side. He has been unlucky not to add more to that tally, striking the woodwork against Southampton and spurning several good chances in other games too, but there have been several games when he’s struggled to get involved or make an impact.

In fact, his main issue has been that he’s often looked rushed and a little too eager to impress.

Maybe the emergence of Antony Martial has stoked a competitive fire in him to prove that he’s the big dog at the club. As a professional athlete, I can only imagine that there’s probably a little of truth to that. And that’s not a bad thing.

He just needs to remember that they’re each pulling for the same team. In fact, he’s already shown suggestions that he should link up deliciously with Martial over the coming weeks, months, and years.

But either way the criticism Memphis has recent faced is redundant, because he is still only 21-years-old and just 8 games into a Manchester United career that will hopefully last for years.

By this point, all we wanted to have seen was just little flashes of potential that suggest he could be the real deal. And he’s done just that. It’s too early to expect relentless consistency. Let’s not forget that it took Cristiano Ronaldo three seasons to truly adjust to English football, and when he did he never looked back.

The same patience needs to be applied to Memphis Depay. Because if it isn’t then there’s a chance he’ll drown before we even gave him a chance to swim.

#2:Lockheed F-35s finish at-sea test flights as U.S. Navy warms to new jet

fox news - #2:Lockheed F-35s finish at-sea test flights as U.S. Navy warms to new jet
Two Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jets wrapped up a second round of successful test flights off the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier on Friday, a key milestone toward operational use of the jets by the U.S. Navy in coming years.

The flight tests took place about 100 miles off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia, in crosswinds of about 40 knots, and included the first night flights at sea with a redesigned helmet made by Rockwell Collins Inc  and Israel's Elbit Systems.

The high-risk flights also tested the jets' ability to take off with less airspeed, with after-burners and with heavier loads of simulated weapons. During normal F-35C launches, a jet goes from zero to 150 miles per hour, traveling the 310-foot length of the catapult in about two seconds.

The results will set the standards for fleetwide F-35C catapult launch settings for the service life of the aircraft, said Joe DellaVedova, spokesman for the $391 billion weapons program, the Pentagon's most expensive arms project.

U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Haley, commander of Naval Air Force Atlantic, said developmental testing of the F-35C, the carrier variant of the new stealthy fighter jet, had been   "pretty doggone good" compared with earlier aircraft.

“We’re basically two years from being operational,” Haley told reporters aboard the ship known as "Ike," which recently completed a nearly two-year period in dry dock maintenance.

Navy officials said developmental testing of the F-35C is about 80 percent complete, with a third round of even more difficult at-sea testing planned next summer.

The Navy will be the last of the U.S. services to start using the new jets, following the Marine Corps, which declared an initial squadron combat-ready in July, and the Air Force, which is slated to follow suit in August 2016. The Navy is expected to have a first combat-ready squadron in late 2018.

Haley said the F-35 C-model would provide a "huge benefit" to U.S. military commanders in coming years, working in tandem with Boeing Co F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jets and EA-18G electronic attack planes for years to come.

He said the jets' ability to fuse data from a variety of radars and other sensors, and then share it with ships and other aircraft, would change the way the U.S. Navy fights wars.

"The F-35 is going to bring ... sensors and an ability to guide the fight, whether it's an air-to-ground fight or an air-to-air fight. They’re going to have an ability that’s going to change how we think about getting to the target, delivering weapons and getting out of the target," Haley said.

Navy Commander Tony Wilson, one of five test pilots involved in the tests on the Eisenhower, said he thought last year's first round of tests on the USS Nimitz, and the jets' participation in a recent integrated test with other aircraft, had helped reverse previous lukewarm support for the program.

He said it was also a huge advantage that the new aircraft could easily be upgraded since it is software-based.

"I think the Navy is going to be excited to see the tactical performance of the aircraft," he said.

#2:Winona Ryder Feels Liberated to Play Her Age -- Even If Hollywood Didnt Want Her To

fox news - #2:Winona Ryder Feels Liberated to Play Her Age -- Even If Hollywood Didnt Want Her To
With an acting career that has spanned nearly three decades, its easy to forget that Winona Ryder is 43 years old. (She turns 44 on Oct. 29.) Seemingly ageless, shes been immortalized on screen as a gothic rebel and film ingénue, who first garnered attention in 1988 for back-to-back hits,
Beetlejuice and Heathers.

Today, Ryder continues to make headlines for looking nearly the same as she did 25 years ago. But the actress is quick to dismiss that attention.

Its such a double-edged sword, because, its like, I want to be allowed to grow up, Ryder tells ET, curled up in a black tracksuit -- she thought we were going to chat by phone -- in a suite at the Crosby Hotel in New York City. She blames the current state of nostalgia on social media, which has resurfaced younger pictures of her. How do you win? If I dont look ageless, I look haggard. Or if I look normal or whatever, then theyll talk about how bad I look.

WATCH: Here's What the Cast of 'Beetlejuice' Looks Like Now

That sword shes referring to could easily be swapped out for a scalpel, as so many actresses have done in order to maintain a certain appeal. Ryder, however, has no interest in plastic surgery. I dont judge, but Im just terrified of needles, she says.

While her eternal appeal has its benefits -- Ryder is one of the faces of
Marc Jacobs fall 2015 campaign -- it's clear from talking to her that, in some ways, it has hampered her career.

 Marc Jacobs

I feel like when youve had a lot of success in your teen years and 20s -- and Im not trying to speak for anyone else -- but something kind of happens where you are in your 30s and people associate you so much with those other roles, Ryder says. So, they dont really think of you as old enough, even though you are old enough.

By 2001, the actress proved herself as a formidable talent with Oscar-nominated roles in

The Age of Innocence and Little Women, alongside more cultish films --

Celebrity, Girl, Interrupted, Reality Bites -- and even appeared as herself in

Zoolander.

But after turning 30, she was arrested for shoplifting and took a four-year break. I feel like I kind of had this thing in my 30s where it was just hard because people were really holding onto this ingénue thing, Ryder says. She was rebelling against herself, telling

Interview magazine in 2013, that her legal troubles were a culmination of being sent off in another direction.

NEWS: Winona Ryder Says She Wore a $10 Dress to the Oscars

I wasnt that anymore and I looked young, you know, and Im not complaining about that, but I also agreed, Ryder adds, as she sits wide-eyed on the rooms loveseat. I wouldnt buy myself as a district attorney when I was 35 either, even though I could have been one, you know, age-wise.

Even though she got back to work, with forgettable roles in The Ten and

Sex and Death 101, it wasnt until she landed a part in Black Swan that she felt liberated enough to play her age

. The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky, went on to earn Natalie Portman an Oscar for her role as an ambitious ballerina who stops at nothing to become a principal dancer.

#2:Mapping 100 Years of Earthquakes, in 3-D

fox news - #2:Mapping 100 Years of Earthquakes, in 3-D
Since 1900, there have been more than 10,000 “strong” earthquakes—with magnitudes of 6 or greater—around the world, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. But what exactly does that look like?

Richie Carmichael, a software developer at Esri, a company that provides
geographic information system (GIS) software, has created a visualization of all that seismic activity: an interactive 3-D globe. Using data from USGS and Wikipedia, Carmichael plotted where and how large earthquakes were in any given year between 1900 and 2015.

“A 3-D display is uniquely suited to representing global phenomena,” says Carmichael in an email. “Print and digital 2D maps are often truncated on or near the poles and close the international date line. With a globe it is possible to view quakes in the polar regions and pacific without page breaks.”

Users can rotate the virtual globe to see a specific area, and filter the data by the largest or deadliest earthquakes, as well as by the cause of the quakes—like those brought on by nuclear activity.

Quake map: Global view of 10,765 earthquakes and 69 nuclear explosions since 1900.

http://t.co/xb4atfLpgK #esri #js

pic.twitter.com/DU7pYELIG9

— Richie Carmichael (@KiwiRichie) October 7, 2015

In the chart below the globe, the clustering of dots—each dot representing one event—seems to suggest that earthquakes are becoming more frequent. Indeed, a recent study by USGS researchers found that there were more than twice as many “large” earthquakes (defined here as magnitudes 7 or above) in the first quarter of 2014 than there were back in 1979. The planet saw a

record number of earthquakes last April

, with 13 quakes with magnitudes of 6.5.

“We have recently experienced a period that has had one of the highest rates of great

earthquakes ever recorded,” according to Tom Parsons, a research geophysicist at USGS.

But this doesn’t mean “The Big One” is coming. Most researchers agree that the frequency spike is most likely random. Plus, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen an uptick in quakes:

between 1950 and 1965, the earth shook more than usual, too. As the USGS

explains, “A temporary increase or decrease in seismicity is part of the normal fluctuation of earthquake rates. Neither an increase or decrease worldwide is a positive indication that a large earthquake is imminent.” In fact, Parson’s study shows that since 1979, the average rate of major earthquakes has been roughly 10 a year.

What has increased, however, is the quality of surveillance. The USGS has more than 2,000 seismic sensors—many of which are in the U.S—and the agency plans to eventually establish a network of more than

7,000 sensors in the U.S. alone. That will allow for denser coverage in at-risk urban areas. To better track quakes outside of the U.S. border, the agency has

tapped into the power of Twitter

, monitoring tweets to detect quakes in as little as 29 seconds after an event.

As detection has become more advanced, so has earthquake-resistant technology. Recently, a San Francisco hospital became the first U.S. building to

use a thick goo that can absorb 80 to 90 percent of an earthquake’s energy. And in India, civil engineers are

testing the use of old crushed tires to strengthen the base of buildings to reduce vibration. Their test has shown that when the rubber is mixed with sand, it’s possible to improve seismic resistance by as much as 50 percent.

This is a good thing, since Bill McGuire, a professor at the geophysical and climate hazards at University College London,

suggests that the ever-changing climate could very will shake up the Earth more in the future. As temperatures rise rise—along with sea levels—more stress will be put on the crust of the Earth:

GPS measurements reveal that the crust beneath the Greenland ice sheet is already rebounding in response to rapid melting, providing the potential—according to researchers—for future earthquakes, as faults beneath the ice are relieved of their confining load. The possibility exists that these could trigger submarine landslides spawning tsunamis capable of threatening North Atlantic coastlines. Eastern Iceland is bouncing back too as its

Vatnajökull ice cap fades away. When and if it vanishes entirely, new research predicts a lively response from the volcanoes currently residing beneath. A dramatic elevation in landslide activity would be inevitable in the Andes, Himalayas, European Alps and elsewhere, as the ice and permafrost that sustains many mountain faces melts and thaws.

“The bottom line is that through our climate-changing activities we are loading the dice in favour of escalating geological havoc at a time when we can most do without it,” he concludes. We best speed up those tests on infrastructure that can resist

quake damage—especially in cities.

#2:China's J31 stealth fighter specifications were revealed online

fox news - #2:China's J31 stealth fighter specifications were revealed online
The J-31 is a mid-weight, twin rudder and twin-engine jet with the typical configuration that is commonly shared by other 5th generation fighters such as Sukhoi T-50. J-31 incorporates certain stealth characters such as forward swept intake ramps with diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI) bumps, trapezoidal wings and a two-piece canopy.

The J-31 appears to be a smaller and more agile aircraft than the Chengdu J-20 that resembles a twin engine F-35C.

The reported maximum engine thrust figure of "88.29 kn" or 9 tons, does conform with statements made by Chinese officials to IHS Jane's at the 2015 Paris Air Show that China was testing a new 9-ton medium thrust
turbofan on the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation FC-1/JF-17 fighter. Thought to be an improved version of the WS-13 Taishan turbofan reportedly developed from the Russian Klimov 8.29-ton thrust RD-33 turbofan, it will power versions of the single-engine FC-1 and the twin-engine FC-31. China is working on an improved variant named WS-13A with 100KN of thrust for use on the J-31.

The data posted online describes the FC-31 as "designed for high survivability, low radar detectability, low IR (infrared) signature, and excellent capabilities for electronic counter measures".

Avic said the fifth-generation fighter jet, which has a 1,200 km (750-mile) combat range and a top speed of 2,205 kph (1,370 mph).

The J31 has a maximum payload capacity of 8 metric tons.

Pakistan Air Force is looking to buy 30 to 40 J-31 aircraft.

The high school's policies section states: "Extreme hairstyles or hair coloring. Haircuts shorter than number 2 are NOT allowed." But, her mom is slamming the school for "unnecessary punishment," after Sutcliffe was punished simply for having numerous braids, instead of just one.

"I couldn't believe the school had got their priorities so wrong. They denied her of her right to an education just because she had plaits in her hair," said her mother.

Sutcliffe removed her braids so that she could return to school.

#2:Box Office: ‘Pan’ Bombing as ‘Martian’ Heads for $34 Million Weekend Win

fox news - #2:Box Office: ‘Pan’ Bombing as ‘Martian’ Heads for $34 Million Weekend Win
The flight to Mars is towering over the flight to Neverland as Fox’s second weekend of “The Martian” looks likely to pull in as much as $34 million, according to early Friday estimates.

Warner Bros.’ opening of “Pan” is on a much more modest trajectory with projections for $20 million, at best, during the Columbus Day weekend. The Hugh Jackman vehicle scored $650,000 at Thursday night previews in the U.S. — one quarter of the $2.5 million for “The Martian” — and was on track for an opening day in the $6 million to $7 million range.

The performance for “Pan” is not a surprise, but it is a clear and costly disappointment. Expectations for the film, which opens at 3,515 locations and has a $150 million price tag, have been in the low $20 millions in recent days. Reviews have been unkind for the origins story, which also stars Rooney Mara and Garrett Hedlund, with a 24% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The Martian,” which generated a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, could take in as much as $10 million on Friday. The Matt Damon space adventure should wind up the weekend well above the $100 million mark.

“It’s an overall slow weekend on tap, but a great opportunity for ‘The Martian’ to continue to wow audiences,” noted Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Rentrak.

Dergarabedian said the weekend is shaping up to be down slightly from the year-ago period, when the second weekend of “Gone Girl” led with $26.4 million.

Sony’s third weekend of “Hotel Transylvania 2” will easily beat “Pan” for the second slot at roughly $25 million to $28 million. The toon will finish the frame with around $125 million in its first 17 days.

By contrast, Sony’s seeing a less than enthusiastic reception for “The Walk

,” which expands to 2,509 locations amid tempered expectations in the $4 million to $6 million range. The film, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Philippe Petit, earned a modest $2.5 million in its first week in a limited debut at 448 premium large-format theaters.

Reviews for the drama, set in 1974, have been impressive with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Pan” could see better numbers from overseas markets as it launches this weekend in 52 territories, including Germany, Russia, Korea, Mexico and Spain. “Pan” has also scored a release in China, where it debuts on Oct. 22.

“I think the global component could be strong for ‘Pan,'” Dergarbedian said.

#2:The Origins of Religion: How Supernatural Beliefs Evolved

fox news - #2:The Origins of Religion: How Supernatural Beliefs Evolved
Many Catholics reveled in the pope's whirlwind visit to the East Coast of the United States last month. But as the devout return to life as usual, nonreligious Americans may be left scratching their heads, wondering what all the fuss was about.

The vast majority of the U.S. population does not belong to the Catholic Church
, and a growing percentage of Americans are not affiliated with any organized religion at all, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Centers. So the question then becomes, what role does religion play in today's American society? Perhaps oddly, that question can be answered by a group of people not usually associated with religion: scientists.

Despite the popular belief that science and religion (or science and the supernatural, more generally) don't quite go hand in hand, scientists have quite a lot to say about this topic — specifically, why such beliefs even exist in the first place. [
Infographic: Views of Catholics in America by the Numbers]

The 'god faculty'

There are many theories as to how religious thought originated. But two of the most widely cited ideas have to do with how early humans interacted with their natural environment, said Kelly James Clark, a senior research fellow at the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

Picture this: You're a human being living many thousands of years ago. You're out on the plains of the Serengeti, sitting around, waiting for an antelope to walk by so you can kill it for dinner. All of a sudden, you see the grasses in front of you rustling. What do you do? Do you stop and think about what might be causing the rustling (the wind or a lion, for example), or do you immediately take some kind of action?

"On the plains of the Serengeti, it would be better to not sit around and reflect. People who took their time got selected out," Clark told Live Science. Humans who survived to procreate were those who had developed what evolutionary scientists call a hypersensitive agency-detecting device, or HADD, he said.

In short, HADD is the mechanism that lets humans perceive that many things have "agency," or the ability to act of their own accord. This understanding of how the world worked facilitated the rapid decision-making process that humans had to go through when they heard a rustling in the grass. (Lions act of their own accord. Better run.)

But in addition to helping humans make rational decisions, HADD may have planted the seeds for religious thought. In addition to attributing agency to lions, for example, humans started attributing agency to things that really didn't have agency at all. [

5 Ways Our Caveman Instincts Get the Best of Us

]

"You might think that raindrops aren't agents," Clark said. "They can't act of their own accord. They just fall. And clouds just form; they're not things that can act. But what human beings have done is to think that clouds are agents. They think [clouds] can act," Clark said of early humans.

And then humans took things to a whole new level. They started attributing meaning to the actions of things that weren't really acting of their own accord. For example, they thought raindrops were "acting for a purpose," Clark said.

Acting for a purpose is the basis for what evolutionary scientists call the Theory of Mind (ToM) — another idea that's often cited in discussions about the origins of religion. By attributing intention or purpose to the actions of beings that did have agency, like other people, humans stopped simply reacting as quickly as possible to the world around them — they started anticipating what other beings' actions might be and planning their own actions accordingly. (Being able to sort of get into the mind of another purposeful being is what Theory of Mind is all about.)

ToM was very helpful to early humans. It enabled them to discern other people's positive and negative intentions (e.g., "Does that person want to mate with me or kill me and steal my food?"), thereby increasing their own chances of survival.

But when people started attributing purpose to the actions of nonactors, like raindrops, ToM took a turn toward the supernatural. [

Infographic: Americans' Beliefs in Paranormal Phenomena

]

"The roaring threat of a thunderstorm or the devastation of a flood is widely seen across cultures as the product of a dangerous personal agent in the sky or river, respectively," said Allen Kerkeslager, an associate professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia."Likewise, the movements of the sun, moon and stars are widely explained as the movements of personal agents with extraordinary powers,"Kerkeslager told Live Science in an email.

This tendency to explain the natural world through the existence of beings with supernatural powers

 — things like gods, ancestral spirits, goblins and

fairies — formed the basis for religious beliefs, according to many cognitive scientists. Collectively, some scientists refer to HADD and ToM as the "god faculty," Clark said.

In fact, human beings haven't evolved past this way of thinking and making decisions, he added.

"Now, we understand better that the things we thought were agents aren't agents," Clark said. "You can be educated out of some of these beliefs, but you can't be educated out of these cognitive faculties. We all have a hyperactive agency-detecting device. We all have a theory of mind."

For the good of the group

But not everyone agrees that religious thinking is just a byproduct of evolution — in other words, something that came about as a result of nonreligious, cognitive faculties. Some scientists see religion as more of an adaptation — a trait that stuck around because the people who possessed it were better able to survive and pass on their genes.

Robin Dunbar is an evolutionary psychologist and anthropologist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom whose work focuses mostly on the behavior of primates, including nonhuman primates like baboons. Dunbar thinks religion may have evolved as what he calls a "group-level adaptation." Religion is a "

kind of glue that holds society together," Dunbar wrote in "How Many Friends Does One Person Need?: Dunbar's Number and Other Evolutionary Quirks" (Harvard University Press, 2010).

Humans may have developed religion as a way to promote cooperation in social groups, Dunbar said. He noted that primates tend to live in groups because doing so benefits them in certain ways. For instance, hunting in groups is more effective than hunting alone. But living in groups also has drawbacks. Namely, some individuals take advantage of the system. Dunbar calls these people "freeriders."

"Freeriding is disruptive because it loads the costs of the social contract onto some individuals, while others get away with paying significantly less," Dunbar wrote in a New Scientist article, "

The Origin of Religion as a Small-Scale Phenomenon

." As a result, those who have been exploited become less willing to support the social contract. In the absence of sufficient benefit to outweigh these costs, individuals will leave in order to be in smaller groups that incur fewer costs."

But if the group can figure out a way to get everyone to behave in an unselfish way, individual members of the group are less likely to storm off, and the group is more likely to remain cohesive.

Religion may have naturally sprung up from this need to keep everybody on the same page, Dunbar said. Humans' predisposition to attribute intention to just about everything (e.g., volcanic eruptions, lunar eclipses, thunderstorms) isn't necessarily the reason religion came about, but it helps to explain why religions typically involve supernatural elements that describe such phenomena.

#2:Amazon wants to know why many of its employees are desperately miserable

fox news - #2:Amazon wants to know why many of its employees are desperately miserable
Amazon has a problem: A lot of its employees seem desperately miserable. This isn’t something the company wants to become part of its permanent reputation since it will make it harder to attract top engineering talent. To fix this problem, Amazon is apparently trying to do more to figure out just how many of its employees absolutely hate their jobs and, more importantly, figure out why those employees hate their jobs.

BACKGROUND: Inside Amazon: Do employees actually hate it?

Sources tell Bloomberg that “over the past few months, the online retailer has been ramping up efforts to get regular feedback from corporate staffers about their work environments” and has been expanding those efforts ever since The New York Times dropped a bombshell report this past summer about Amazon employees who were pushed out of the company after coming down with serious illnesses, among other things.

What will this initiative entail? We’ll let Bloomberg explain.

“Dubbed Amazon Connections, the internal system poses questions daily to employees to collect responses on topics such as job satisfaction, leadership and training opportunities,” the publication reports. “The confidential feedback is assessed by a team in Seattle and Prague that compiles the answers in daily reports shared with the company.”

We have no idea if this initiative will improve working life at Amazon, although sadly the company could improve things if it just

#2:Joe Girardi gets defensive: Can’t blame me for hitting collapse

fox news - #2:Joe Girardi gets defensive: Can’t blame me for hitting collapse
In eight years with the Yankees, Joe Girardi never has allowed outside opinions to shape his belief in what type of manager he is, and that hasn’t changed after the Yankees failed to play a postseason series for the third straight year.

“I did the best I could is the bottom line,’’ Girardi said Friday morning at a Yankee Stadium press conference while the postseason roared onward without the Yankees, who were humiliated by Dallas Keuchel and the Astros, 3-0, in the AL wild-card game Tuesday.

“If people thought I could have done better, I understand that. So you live with it.’’

Ending the regular season with six losses in seven games and then getting blanked in the wild-card contest left Girardi open for criticism on several fronts.

Not starting Jacoby Ellsbury against the Astros caused an uproar in some circles because of Ellsbury being in the second leg of a seven-year, $153 million contract and being a .301 (40-for-133) hitter with a .361 on-base percentage in his postseason career. But Ellsbury also was hitting .202 (23-for-114) from Sept. 1 to the end of the regular season.

Earlier this week, GM Brian Cashman said Girardi managed the Yankees into the postseason and it

“wasn’t his fault we didn’t hit.’’

Brett Gardner

Girardi pointed that out Friday.

“When I look at our club down the stretch we struggled more offensively than anything we did,’’ Girardi said of a lineup that didn’t match their first-half success in the second half.

“We have a lot of players considered in their prime age.’’

That list consists of Brian McCann (31), Brett Gardner (32) and Ellsbury (32). All tailed off during the second half, which put added responsibility on the other hitters. That increased when Mark Teixeira appeared in just two games after Aug. 18 due to a fractured right leg.

“With the information in front of me, being prepared and the discussions I had with my coaches, I did what I felt was right every day,’’ Girardi said. “The bottom line is that we didn’t win, so that will be questioned. I understand that. Hindsight can be 20/20, and could you have done something different? In saying that, we aren’t sure that would have worked any better.’’

Dellin Betances

Photo: Paul J. Bereswill

Benching Ellsbury so the right-handed-hitting Chris Young could face Keuchel was the final can of gas on the fire for the “Joe Must Go’’ choir that been singing often across the final month.

As Dellin Betances scuffled through a September that wasn’t in line with four of the first five months — when he was the best reliever in baseball and an All-Star for the second straight season — Girardi was criticized for using the right-hander too much. And all those voices weren’t dialing in from outside the organization.

After defending the overall job he did, Girardi went on the offensive to debunk the theory Betances was overworked in September, when he gave up 11 hits and 11 walks in 14 2/3 innings and posted a 1.84 ERA (his second-worst month after a 4.09 mark in June).

“There were a lot of question marks on me on how much I used Dellin during the course of the season and I was using him more. Does anyone know how many pitches he threw this year compared to last year?’’ a defensive Girardi said. “I would bet not. Does anyone know that he was shut down the last 10 days of September last year? He threw five more pitches in the regular season this year than last year. I was cognizant of his work load. When I look at what happened to Dellin, he had a human month.’’

fox news - #2:Another four car makers fail diesel emissions tests: Guardian
Another four car makers have joined the list of those whose diesel cars emit more pollution on the road than in regulatory tests, the issue that has created a massive scandal and major recall for Germany's Volkswagen AG
the Guardian reported Friday. Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi vehicles were all found to perform differently on the road than in test conditions in European tests, the Guardian said, citing data from Emissions Analytics, which tested the cars. The paper quoted Nick Molden from Emissions Analystics as saying the the issue is systemic across the industry. The report comes after the paper last week reported the same issue was found with cars made by Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Citroen, Fiat, Volvo and Jeep.

Well, someone just asked her about it.

Queen Margaery herself was at New York Comic-Con on Thursday for the
Game of Thrones panel when, during the fan Q&A portion, some dude asked her about her almost uncanny resemblance with a puppet pig.

Clearly Dormer was already aware of the comparisons, because she facepalms as soon as she hears the question. But she manages to respond with more class than we would have had, revealing with a laugh, "When I saw Kermit's new girlfriend, I was like 'Maybe I'm a bit responsible for that.

The actress brings up a scene from GoT season three, in which her character is walking along the cliffs with Sansa and discusses being teased as a young girl for having a snubby nose. "I phoned [creators] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss], its the only time Ive ever asked them to put in a line, 'Please, can you put in a line about a piggy nose? she explains. Because I was bullied at school.

I used to get told I had pig nostrils. Ive got big nostrils, my whole family does. Its a burden we bear, she told the crowd, good-naturedly. I said for my own demons, it would be like sticking two middle fingers up to the bullies of my childhood if Margaery is joking about it. If you watch the DVDs back, you'll see me doing a pig noise.

So, Dormer says, I brought up the pig subject in the first placeI've already made the comparison of my nostrils to a pig, so I can't really argue about it.

Now, watch Kermit tell all in his first interview since splitting with Miss Piggy:

#2:N. Korean capital set for military extravaganza

fox news - #2:N. Korean capital set for military extravaganza
The North Korean capital Pyongyang braced Saturday for what was predicted to be one of the largest ceremonial displays of military strength in the nuclear-armed nation's history.

A cavalcade of tanks, armoured vehicles and assorted ballistic hardware was set to rumble through the city's Kim Il-Sung Square, with thousands of hard-marching troops for escorts, in celebration of the ruling Workers' Party's 70th birthday.

One thing the organisers could not control was the weather, with an overnight thunderstorm and light rain in the morning threatening to put a dampener on the whole event.

As of 11:30 am (0300 GMT) -- with the roads slick with rainwater -- there was still no formal announcement of when the parade would actually begin.

But hundreds of military trucks, used to ferry participants to the parade venue, were lined up along the banks of the capital's Taedong River, suggesting the event would go ahead.

Taking the salute from the massed military ranks will be supreme leader Kim Jong-Un, the third generation of a family dynasty that has ruled the North with absolute authority for the past seven decades.

- Family respects -

Kim paid tribute to that legacy with a midnight visit Friday to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, which serves as the mausoleum for his father Ki Jong-Il and grandfather Kim Il-Sung, North Korea's founding leader.

The scale of Saturday's parade was already apparent from satellite images taken four days before, which showed a sprawling training ground in Pyongyang featuring some 800 tents, 700 trucks and 200 armoured vehicles.

As with similar displays in the past, the event will be closely watched for glimpses of any new hardware that might signal a forward step in the North's military development.

When announcing plans for the "grand-style" parade back in February, the ruling party's top decision-making body had stressed the importance of "cutting-edge" weaponry suitable for modern warfare.

North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests and threatened a fourth as part of a nuclear weapons and missile programme that it has pursued through a barrage of international sanctions.

There is debate among experts as to how far it has come in developing those weapons, especially the ability to shrink nuclear warheads so that they can fit on a missile.

- Nuclear arsenal -

An exhaustively researched report published this week by the US-based Institute for Science and International Security estimated that North Korea had between 10 and 16 nuclear weapons as of the end of 2014.

The report argued it was likely the country could already build a warhead to fit atop a Nodong missile -- with a range of less than 800 miles (1,300 kilometres) -- but added that the reliability of such a weapon was open to question.

Months of planning and preparation have gone into Saturday's parade, involving a mass mobilisation of state personnel and resources to ensure its success.

The capital itself was given a comprehensive makeover -- its streets lined and decorated with giant posters, red banners and national flags, many of them displaying the numerals "10-10" in reference to the ruling party's official October 10 birthday.

The North excels at such choreographed displays of military muscle, which aim to boost pride and patriotism at home while sending a defiant message to an international community that has sought, without success, to pressure Pyongyang into abandoning its nuclear weapons ambitions.

But they also reflect North Korea's diplomatic isolation, with Chinese party politburo standing committee member Liu Yunshan the only foreign dignitary of any significance attending Saturday's event.

Kim and Liu met for talks on Friday, during which the Chinese official delivered a letter from President Xi Jinping, and voiced Beijing's willingness to work with Pyongyang on resuming multi-party talks on its nuclear programme.

China remains North Korea's most important diplomatic ally and economic partner, even as Beijing has grown increasingly wary and impatient with Pyongyang's nuclear weapons ambitions.

fox news - #2:This Doggie Left His Toy Outside and a Red Fox Found it and Went Nuts!
This poor pup forgot to bring his toy in from the yard. Now, the fox has found it!

You might not have thought a fox would want a dog toy. Or maybe you thought a fox wouldn’t have even known what to do with a dog toy, even if he found it. But this fox sure caught on quickly. He’s having a blast! He’s throwing it in the air, pretending it’s a mouse or something to hunt. And he seems blissfully unaware of the toy’s owner a few yards away behind glass. The poor dog is throwing a fit! “That’s my toy,” he is saying, “Give it baaaaack. Mommy, mommy, make him give it baaack!”

But the fox doesn’t seem to notice. He’s wayyy to busy having a great time.

Foxes and dogs have a lot in common, but it’s important to remember that foxes are wild animals. The fox here is acting a lot like any regular dog might, but that doesn’t mean we should bring a fox into our homes as pets. When we can enjoy them from a distance, we all win.
